台風: taifuu. Typhoon in English.

The first one this year appeared, typhoon #1. It doesn’t look like they are predicting landfall, though. Up to now tropical cyclones have been a very abstract thing that happens 1000 miles away. Now it could happen near here, since the coast is only about 10 km from my apartment.

(They being the Japan Meteorological Society, who also keep track of earthquakes.)
